Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Traditional Chinese medicine is the oldest evidence-based medical system. It is centred around yin and yang, the two basic elements of the universe. In a healthy person, yin and yang are in balance. If this balance is disturbed, the flow of the life force, the Qi, through the body is disturbed. According to the concepts of TCM, cancer is the consequence of a severely damaged yin which expresses itself in extreme fatigue, lethargy, severe weight loss and lack of appetite.

Traditional Chinese Medicine can neither treat nor cure cancer. Its aim is to strengthen the body’s defences against the tumour cells. For this reason it can never be used as a stand-alone therapy but is an effective add-on to Western medicine. Even in China cancer patients are treated with both methods.

Traditional Chinese Medicine helps to soften the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, improves the patient’s physical well-being and strengthens the immune system in its fight against cancer.

The major treatment methods of TCM are:

  • Drug therapy with medicinal herbs
  • Food therapy to ensure an energetically balanced diet
  • Tui na, a massage therapy targeting meridian [acupressure] points and reflex segments to remove dysfunctions
  • Acupuncture for pain therapy
  • Qigong, a breathing and motion technique for relaxation.

At the SanaFontis hospital, three medical consultants - one of them hailing from China - with special training in TCM provide an individualised therapy using methods from Traditional Chinese Medicine to complement school medicine procedures.
