Radiation Therapy

One of the most incisive weapons in the fight against cancer is radiation therapy. By destroying the malignant cells’ genetic programming it keeps the cells from dividing and causes the tumour to “shrivel up and die”. However, not every tumour responds to radiation therapy. Successful radiation treatment also depends on the tumour stage and on whether its cells are sensitive to radiation.

Some tumours can be cured with just one session of radiation therapy. For other carcinomas it is used as a complementary treatment before or after surgery, or in combination with chemotherapy. For patients with advanced tumours radiation therapy is instrumental in targeting specific areas that are painful or cause problems.

Since the Cancer Hospital SanaFontis has not got a radio-oncological department of its own, we refer our patients to the Radiological Department of the Freiburg University Hospital for radiation therapy.
