Psycho-Oncology

Not only does a diagnosis of cancer suddenly confront people with a life-threatening disease, it can also plunge them into a deep psychological crisis.

At this acute crisis point in their life, patients need professional help that will also see them through their return to a normal life after finishing the cancer therapy. Good and individualised psychological care makes it easier for patients to accept the diagnosis, the necessary medical tests involved and the subsequent treatment.

The side effects of an aggressive chemotherapy or radiation therapy can be reduced or even avoided altogether by means of psychotherapeutic intervention, relaxation techniques and guided imagery therapy. Pain and its perception can be effectively influenced with appropriate medication because pain frequently has psychological causes as well. Depression, fear, and sleeping disorders also respond well to psychotherapeutic treatment.

Helping the patient overcome the disease is a priority for the psycho-oncologists working at our hospital. The patient's needs and problems are identified in one-on-one interviews. Then treatment is initiated based on a meticulous analysis of the problems and taking into account a patient’s capacities and strengths. If necessary, we extend the treatment to include the patient’s family as well.

Our objectives in psycho-oncological care:

  • Help the patient come to terms with and accept the diagnosis of cancer
  • Improve the patient’s psychological and emotional state
  • Relief from disease-related reactions such as pain, depression, fear, and sleeping disorders
  • Strengthen the patient’s reserves
  • Teach the patient strategies that help him to change his attitude and behaviour
