Art Therapy

Art therapy provides an outlet for patients to express their anxieties and emotions through creativity. Distinct from craft activities, art therapy does not aim to distract patients from their anxieties, rather it provides a safe framework to express those fundamental fears which inevitably arise during serious illness. Patients often mistakenly believe that one must be competent in painting in order to benefit from such therapy but in fact it is actually an advantage to have no idea. This means that rather than being guided by the intellect, the patient is encouraged to be spontaneous and simply to put paint on the canvas without planning a composition. In doing this the patient is able to leave everyday thoughts behind and instead to journey into the painting. It is important to know that there are no expectations from the therapist and that any discussion between the patient and therapist will focus on the process not the technical mastery of the artist. For those who wish, there is also the possibility to dance or to sculpt in order to approach emotions which seem too difficult to put into words. One-to-one therapy provides patients with absolute privacy accompanied at all times by our experienced therapists. Research has shown that patients who are able to express their concerns through paint or dance or music are better equipt to cope with the emotional challenges involved in suffering from serious illness.
